Signs You Have Free Radical Damage

Signs You Have Free Radical Damage

WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS?

Free radicals are the result of the body’s natural oxidative process, and the byproduct of the foods we eat or exposure to toxins like cigarette smoke, excessive sunlight, ionizing radiation, or pollution.

When the body breaks down molecules for various chemical reactions, sometimes the shells of the atoms that make up these molecules aren’t properly filled with electrons. Every atom has a nucleus and a surrounding shell of electrons. Most of the shells require a series of pairs of electrons. If there is an uneven amount that is not balanced with a bond to another molecule, then the molecule becomes a free radical.

As oxygen is processed in the body during energy production, a variety of forms of the oxygen molecule are created. These included hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, etc. These are reactive oxygen species. The type depends on the number of electrons and protons (hydrogen) involved. All that said, basically, if you have an uneven number of negative charges (electrons), they seek neutrality and wreak havoc in doing so.

These atoms are unstable, and they seek out other atoms or molecules to form a bond and stabilize the unpaired electron. At this point it’s considered a free radical and the accumulation of free radicals leads to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is the damage that happens to cell membranes, proteins and DNA as these unpaired electrons form bonds with them.

On their search for an electron to pair with, these free radicals can cause serious damage to your DNA and cells, leading to diseases like cancer. Free radicals, if bound to a DNA nucleotide, can cause mutations.

SIGNS OF FREE RADICAL DAMAGE

If you have free radical damage, or high levels of oxidative stress, then your body isn’t able to neutralize these free radicals quickly or efficiently.

When you have free radical damage, or oxidative stress, you may notice these symptoms:

  • Cataracts, worsening eyesight
  • Frequent headaches
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Fatigue
  • Memory loss or brain fog
  • Inability to recover quickly from exercise
  • Pain and stiffness

Overall, oxidative stress and free radical damage can lead to premature signs of aging - which may not seem harmful to you, but the long-term impact of high oxidative stress levels equates to serious diseases like cancer, diabetes, dementia, inflammatory disorders, and so much more.

You can take action now and work to reduce your oxidative stress by consuming antioxidants. Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals by lending them that missing electron, so they can be stable again.

Antioxidants are found in many different foods – particularly fruits and vegetables, which is why Dr. Warner is such a big advocate of the Mediterranean Diet. It’s a lifestyle diet that focuses on whole, unprocessed foods. This particular diet is filled with antioxidants.

But we understand that it can be difficult to get all the nutrients you need from diet alone. That’s why Dr. Warner created Well Theory supplements designed intentionally to lower oxidative stress and your risk for free radical damage.

NEUTRALIZE FREE RADICALS WITH WELL THEORY

There are several Well Theory products that feature antioxidants. The antioxidant supplement you choose to take depends on your preference and specific needs.

DNA Repair

If you’re concerned with premature aging, look no further than the antioxidant supplement Resveratrol. It’s commonly found in the skin of grapes (think red wine) but Dr. Warner wanted to make it available to you in a concentrated form. As part of the Longevity Series, it also promotes cellular energy production, increasing insulin sensitivity and lowering blood glucose levels, while contributing to overall heart health. Resveratrol stimulates activity of an enzyme called Sirt1 – this leads to better DNA repair ability and better bioenergetics in the cell.

Reduce Oxidative Stress

If you’re experiencing signs of chronic inflammation as a result of oxidative stress, then you’ll want a strong anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidants. That’s where Tart Cherry Extract makes its entrance. This natural supplement lowers inflammation and fights pain as well as NSAIDs (think ibuprofen) without all the harsh side effects.

Highly Antioxidant

Because oxidative stress can cause premature aging internally and externally, we want you to know about our Nervous System Multi. It promotes optimal aging while providing antioxidants and boosting your own, all thanks to NAC (N-Acetyl L-Cysteine). This multivitamin lowers inflammation, oxidative stress, and toxins while providing pain relief.

Natural Pain Relief

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is also a great antioxidant! And thankfully, our Joint Health Multi features a 95 percent concentration of curcuminoids. This multivitamin is great for reducing inflammation and pain, while fighting free radicals.

Lower Inflammation

The CoQ10 Plus Gummies are designed to fight oxidative stress with Coenzyme Q10, a naturally occurring antioxidant. CoQ10 is one of the main electron transporters within the electron transport chain as well. This gummy also contains Tart Cherry Extract and Chaga Mushrooms, two more antioxidants that can help lower inflammation and oxidative stress levels.
