Why NAD+ Is Important To Increasing Longevity
At Well Theory, we believe in living a full and active life, for as long as possible. That’s why we’re here to address small steps you can take to help achieve this goal.
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is an essential part of all living cells and their biological processes. It sounds like a scary chemical, but is actually in nearly every cell in your body naturally. But what is it exactly, and how does it help?
WHAT IS NAD+?
NAD+ is a coenzyme that’s involved in many of your metabolic processes, making it vital to energy production and cell health. It can be found throughout the body, especially within the mitochondria, cytoplasm and nucleus of cells. It’s essential for two major functions for our bodies:
- Converting food into energy
- Regulating cell functions
Within the body, NAD+ helps two protein groups referred to as PARPs and Sirtuins. These proteins need NAD+ to function appropriately. Sirtuins specifically help regulate cellular homeostasis, making it vital for healthy cellular function and longevity. PARP plays a critical role in the DNA repair pathway.
As vital as NAD+ is for the body, it naturally decreases as we age.
This is why it’s important that we find ways to increase our levels of NAD+. This will allow us to maintain a greater cellular function, preventing a decline in health throughout the body.
SUPPLEMENTING FOR NAD+
You can increase your levels of NAD+ by supplementing with a precursor molecule to NAD+, like nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN).
Supplementing with NMN has been shown to improve mitochondrial function, preventing cell damage and death.
It’s also been shown to reduce age-related conditions by suppressing gene expression changes, increasing energy generation, insulin sensitivity, and lipid metabolism. NMN has also been shown to be helpful for improving eye function, immunity, and bone density.
Supplementing with NMN has also been associated with a decreased risk for neurodegeneration and metabolic diseases, while improving the overall health span.
Combat Aging
These are some of the reasons that Dr. Meredith Warner wanted to include NMN in Well Theory’s Longevity Series. Alongside Berberine and Resveratrol, NMN can improve cellular health and possibly slow down or reverse aging at the cellular level.
