3 Proven Ways To Purge Free Radicals From Your Body
Hi, Dr. Meredith Warner here –
As a physician, I take a unique approach in improving my patients’ health and lives. Many physicians get into the habit of treating pain and addressing symptoms – instead of looking at their patients’ entire lifestyle to see where holistic changes can be made.
I started my private practice, Warner Orthopedics & Wellness, and founded Well Theory to help my patients, and you, make lasting lifestyle changes that can powerfully impact your wellness goals.
The symptoms of disease and dysfunction, especially “lifestyle” diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and more, can be effectively addressed by addressing the root cause of concern.
In my experience, inflammation can play a huge role in causing these conditions to form in the first place. And one of the most common culprits behind inflammation is something called “oxidative stress.”
WHAT IS OXIDATIVE STRESS?
As your body burns fuel to create energy – for example, when it processes oxygen – it produces molecules with unpaired electrons called “free radicals.” As these free radicals move through the body looking for new electrons, they damage nearby cells, causing inflammation.
Cell breakdown products and damaged protein molecules from the free radical attacks can induce more damaging inflammation.
Normally, your body produces antioxidants to neutralize free radicals, but often we aren’t producing enough. Thankfully, there are some steps you can take today to clear out free radicals.

1. INCREASE ANTIOXIDANT INTAKE
One of the most straightforward ways to solve this issue is to increase your antioxidant intake. Many foods are rich in antioxidants! Leafy greens, bright- or darkly-colored fruits, and more are all rich in antioxidants.
Even red wine has antioxidant content – so you don’t have to eat an extremely limited diet.
2. AVOID REFINED CARBOHYDRATES & PROCESSED FOODS
Processed foods typically contain ingredients that introduce high levels of free radicals in your body – like oxidized fats. Refined sugars found in simple carbohydrates also enhance oxidation in your body.
Be sure to eat a diet of whole foods that are nutrient-dense, so your body has the nutrition it needs to create its own antioxidants. Remember: free radicals are created no matter what you eat, but if you eat nutritionally well-rounded meals, your body is able to create enough antioxidants to keep them in check.
3. ALLEVIATE STRESS
It’s not possible to completely remove stress from our lives, but there are many things we can do to reduce its impact. Stress can harm your physical health. Research has shown that stress-relieving exercises like yoga or meditation may actually help reduce levels of stress-induced oxidative damage in the body.
