How Berberine Helps with Prediabetes

How Berberine Helps with Prediabetes

Prediabetes is when an individual has higher than normal blood sugar levels but they are not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This happens as insulin resistance progresses in severity. Even with prediabetes, the long-term damage of chronic hyperglycemia can already affect your heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. Think about this, more people with prediabetes have neuropathy than with diabetes. (That said, about 50% of cases of neuropathy are idiopathic - meaning we don’t know why they have it.) If you have prediabetes, with lifestyle changes, you could lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Along with these lifestyle changes, the natural compound, berberine, has been shown to help manage prediabetes. Though progressing from prediabetes to diabetes is likely, it is not inevitable!

What Is Berberine?

Berberine is a yellow-colored compound found naturally in different plants. It is found in goldenseal, barberry and even Oregon grapes. Berberine has long been safely used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various conditions. Recent research shows berberine's several benefits. Berberine is used for those dealing with diabetes because it has the potential to lower blood sugar. Berberine has also been used to treat high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Berberine And Prediabetes

Recent studies have shown berberine as an effective natural way to augment the treatment of type 2 diabetes by promoting insulin production. Berberine is shown to increase insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose levels. Berberine is also helpful for those with prediabetes, potentially helping manage the prediabetes (along with other lifestyle changes) and not allowing it to progress to type 2 diabetes. Studies have found berberine’s blood-sugar-lowering properties to be as effective as metformin, which is a medicine given to many individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Metformin is simply another plant-derived compound. Metformin is from the French Lilac.

Berberine is shown to improve overall metabolic health and promote weight loss.

Dr. Meredith Warner’s new Longevity series has been curated to help you unlock the ability to slow aging and possibly reduce your biological age. Berberine stimulates AMPK activation. The AMPK pathway regulates cellular energy and cellular homeostasis. AMPK activation is part of a ‘stress response’ system that promotes cellular maintenance and repair. Berberine has been shown to lower blood sugar, cause weight loss and improve heart health, to name a few.
