What Is Menopause?

Menopause is a normal phase of life that women experience as they age.

This term describes any of the changes a woman experiences after they stop ovulating and experiencing menstrual cycles.

Menopause occurs naturally in women around the age of 40-50, and occurs when the ovaries stop making the hormones estrogen and progesterone – which control menstruation and ovulation.

The average age of onset is 51; early menopause is 40-45 and premature menopause is at age 40 or less. It is possible for women to enter menopause before the age of 40, due to hormonal imbalances, certain treatments for medical conditions, surgery, and more.

Each year in the US, about 2 million women become menopausal – so you are not alone.

Common Symptoms Of Menopause

hot flashes

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are one of the most common and well-known symptoms of menopause. Recent research suggests that hot flashes are caused when decreased estrogen levels impact your hypothalamus and make it more sensitive to slight changes in body temperature.

insomnia and fatigue

Insomnia and Fatigue

It’s very common for hot flashes and night sweats to develop in the evenings, which can keep you up at night. You may also experience anxiety that keeps you awake. In addition, your body produces less melatonin as you age – a hormone that it needs to regulate a healthy, stable circadian rhythm.

mood changes

Mood Changes

The hormonal fluctuations that occur with menopause can impact your mood as well. Estrogen is involved with the production of serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter. Fluctuating hormone levels can disrupt production of serotonin and cause mood swings.

weight gain

Weight Gain

The hormonal changes of menopause may make it more likely to gain weight around the midsection. Additionally, as you age, oxidative damage can build up, reducing the energy produced by your cells’ mitochondria and disrupting energy production + metabolic processes.

Daily Habits To Combat The Symptoms Of Menopause

AT WELL THEORY, OUR GOAL IS TO HELP YOU CURATE A LIFE LIVED WELL – IN A LASTING, HOLISTIC WAY.

1. Practice Good Sleep Hygiene

Good quality rest is vitally important to any wellness routine. As you sleep, your body heals itself, purges free radicals, and cleans toxins from your brain. Drink less caffeine during the day, shut off screens a couple hours before bed (or wear blue light glasses), and lower the temperature in your bedroom to ward off hot flashes.

2. Make Dietary Changes

If you eat a well-balanced, whole foods diet like the Mediterranean Diet, you’ll experience less oxidative stress, slow hormonal weight gain, and ensure that your body is getting the right amount of calcium and vitamin D. These vitamins are vitally important to maintaining bone health and preventing menopausal osteoporosis!

3. Get More Exercise

Hormonal changes can lead to bone loss. You should be taking a well-rounded multivitamin to slow this process, but exercise is a great way to support your joint health! Exercise also releases endorphins, which naturally boost mood, and exercise helps you feel tired enough to sleep well at night.

4. Quit Smoking

Smoking has many health risks for even younger people. However, it is vitally important for older women to quit smoking. It can increase the odds of developing heart disease and osteoporosis, and increases the number and duration of hot flashes. It can also interfere with hormone therapy, if your doctor has prescribed medications to ease your menopause symptoms.
